DESCRIPTION

Omega Speedmaster 145.022-69ST — Tropical Brown Dial, Full Set, Unpolished, Cal. 861, Dated 1969

Omega Speedmaster

Omega is one of Switzerland's most established watchmakers, with a history dating back to 1848. The Speedmaster has been in continuous production since 1957 and is best known for its association with NASA's Apollo program — it was the watch worn on the moon in 1969. It remains one of the more recognizable and collected tool chronographs on the market. The reference 145.022 was produced through much of the late 1960s and into the 1970s, and examples from 1969 carry obvious historical weight given the timing of the moon landings.

This particular example runs the caliber 861, a manual-winding movement that replaced the 321 in 1969 and proved reliable and serviceable over the long term. The 42 x 43 mm steel case is a standard Speedmaster footprint — wide due to the asymmetric case with crown and pushers on the right side. The watch has reportedly been kept unpolished, which preserves the original case geometry and finishing, a meaningful detail for collectors. A recent service in November 2025 means the movement and chronograph functions are in working order.

The standout characteristic here is the dial. Tropical dials — where the original black lacquer has shifted to a brown tone over decades — are uncommon and actively sought by collectors. This example is described as an evenly aged caramel brown with matching patina on the indices and hands, which is the preferable outcome when a dial tropicalizes. Combined with original box and papers dated 1969 and a period-correct flat-link bracelet, this is a well-documented example of an already historically significant reference.

Key Details To Consider

Omega Speedmaster Professional "Moonwatch"

Reference 145.022-69ST | Circa 1969

This is an original, unpolished example of the Omega Speedmaster Professional reference 145.022-69ST, powered by the manual-winding caliber 861 movement. The stainless steel case measures 42 x 43mm and retains its factory finish throughout, with sharp lugs and edges showing only normal wear consistent with age.

The dial has developed an even caramel brown tropical patina over the decades. The aging is consistent across the markers and hands, with yellow patina distributed uniformly. Lume plots remain intact and still react under UV light. Tropical dials of this quality and consistency are uncommon on Speedmasters of this era.

The watch is fitted with its original flat-link steel bracelet, period-correct for the reference. The bracelet is in good condition with minimal stretch and comfortably fits a 7.5" (19cm) wrist.

The movement was serviced in November 2025 and keeps accurate time. The chronograph functions correctly.

This example comes from the original family and is accompanied by its original box and papers, both dated 1969, confirming its provenance.
