DESCRIPTION
Omega Speedmaster 145.022 – A Moonwatch with Heritage
Omega, founded in 1848, stands as one of Switzerland’s most prestigious watch manufacturers, renowned for precision and historic achievement. The brand has served as official timekeeper for the Olympic Games since 1932 and equipped explorers and astronauts in humanity’s greatest endeavors.
The Omega Speedmaster, introduced in 1957 as a racing chronograph, achieved legendary status when NASA selected it as the official watch for all manned space missions after rigorous testing in 1965. It became the first watch worn on the moon during Apollo 11 in 1969, earning its “Moonwatch” designation.
The reference 145.022-69 represents the classic Speedmaster from the space program era, featuring the iconic manual-winding movement, black dial, and asymmetrical case design that has remained largely unchanged since the 1960s. Its tritium luminous material and plexiglass crystal are hallmarks of authentic vintage Speedmasters from this period.
The Speedmaster’s enduring appeal stems from its unique combination of tool watch functionality and space heritage, making it one of the most significant chronographs in horological history.
Key Details To Consider
Offered here is an exceptional example of the iconic Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch, presented in all-original condition. The stainless steel case remains impressively sharp, retaining factory brushing on the lugs and sides. There’s no clear indication it was ever polished, preserving the original lines collectors value.
The original black step dial is remarkably well-preserved, with a clean surface and uniform warm yellow patina on the hour markers. The period-correct bezel insert features the highly desirable dot-over-90 (DON) configuration, and is in excellent condition with minimal signs of wear.
Fitted with its original Omega plexiglass crystal, the watch shows no major scratches or cracks, contributing to its overall outstanding presentation. The 1171 bracelet is tight and solid, with very minimal stretch. It currently fits up to a 7.5” (19cm) wrist, and additional links can be supplied upon request.
Mechanically, the watch performs as it should—the manually wound movement has been tested and keeps time reliably. All chronograph functions operate smoothly and reset crisply.
This Speedmaster is an increasingly difficult find in such well-preserved condition and represents a strong addition to any serious collection.
