DESCRIPTION
Omega Speedmaster 145.022 – A Moonwatch with Heritage
Omega, founded in 1848, stands as one of Switzerland’s most prestigious watch manufacturers, renowned for precision and historic achievement. The brand has served as official timekeeper for the Olympic Games since 1932 and equipped explorers and astronauts in humanity’s greatest endeavors.
The Omega Speedmaster, introduced in 1957 as a racing chronograph, achieved legendary status when NASA selected it as the official watch for all manned space missions after rigorous testing in 1965. It became the first watch worn on the moon during Apollo 11 in 1969, earning its “Moonwatch” designation.
The reference 145.022-69 represents the classic Speedmaster from the space program era, featuring the iconic manual-winding movement, black dial, and asymmetrical case design that has remained largely unchanged since the 1960s. Its tritium luminous material and plexiglass crystal are hallmarks of authentic vintage Speedmasters from this period.
The Speedmaster’s enduring appeal stems from its unique combination of tool watch functionality and space heritage, making it one of the most significant chronographs in horological history.
Key Details To Consider
Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch Ref. 145.022-69 in full stainless steel and well-preserved condition, dating back to 1969. The case displays light wear consistent with age, maintaining its strong lines and original character.
The original black step dial presents beautifully with a warm, even yellow patina across the tritium indices and matching hands, both of which still glow green under UV light. Its faded grey “ghost” bezel insert enhances the vintage aesthetic and individuality of the piece. There’s a small mark in the sub-dial at 9 o’clock, which might have been due to service at some point. It’s not easily visible.
Fitted with a period-correct bracelet showing minimal stretch, comfortably sized for wrists up to approximately 7.7 inches (19.5 cm).
The Caliber 861 movement was professionally serviced in October 2025 and runs perfectly, with all chronograph functions operating as they should. The watch has also been pressure tested to 3ATM (30m), confirming proper sealing.
A superb example of one of the most iconic chronographs ever produced, offering authenticity, character, and mechanical integrity.
