DESCRIPTION

Rolex Explorer 1016 in Steel, 36mm, Black Tritium Dial, Caliber 1570, Circa 1971

Rolex Explorer

Rolex is one of the most recognized watch brands in the world, and that reputation is backed by decades of producing reliable, well-built tool watches. The company has been making watches in Geneva since the early 1900s and has a long history of firsts in the industry, including developing the first waterproof wristwatch case. Their watches are known for holding value well over time, which makes them a common choice for collectors and everyday wearers alike.

The Explorer is one of Rolex's core models and has been in continuous production since the early 1950s. It was designed as a legible, durable watch suited for demanding conditions, and the design has stayed remarkably consistent over the decades. The reference 1016 was produced from roughly 1963 to 1989, making it one of the longest-running references in Rolex history. It runs on the caliber 1570, a robust and well-regarded automatic movement that Rolex used across several models during that era. The 36mm case size was standard for the time, and many collectors actually prefer it over larger modern references.

The 1016 has become a genuinely sought-after vintage reference, largely because of how little it changed over its production run and how well it holds up both aesthetically and mechanically. Dials from this period used tritium for lume, which ages to a warm patina that collectors tend to appreciate. The watch strikes a balance between being simple and purposeful in design while also having a strong track record of durability, which is part of why examples from this era continue to attract serious attention in the vintage market.

Key Details To Consider

The Rolex Explorer 1016 is one of the most straightforward and well-regarded sport watches Rolex produced, and this example from 1971 represents a genuinely attractive opportunity for a collector. The serial number falls in the 2.9 million range, placing production firmly in that year, and the serial is engraved on the inside of the caseback as was standard practice for the period.

The case is in good overall shape with sharp lugs that have held their form well. It has been polished at some point in its life, but the proportions remain clean and symmetrical, which is not always the case with vintage watches that have seen past polishing work. The dial is an early service tritium example showing warm yellow lume plots and matching hands, which is exactly what collectors look for on this reference. The color and consistency of the lume across the dial and hands are genuinely pleasing for a watch of this age.

The Oyster bracelet retains all 12 links and shows very little stretch, which is a meaningful detail on a vintage piece where bracelets are often worn out or have links missing. The case back numbers between the lugs are faint, as is common on well-worn examples, but they are still legible under a loupe with proper lighting.

The movement, caliber 1570, has been tested and is keeping excellent time. The watch has also been pressure tested to 3 ATM (30 meters), so it has been properly serviced and evaluated before listing. Overall this is a solid, honest example of the 1016 in good used condition, wearing its age well without any major issues to flag.
