DESCRIPTION
Rolex Explorer II “Steve McQueen” Ref. 1655 Stainless Steel 1972
The Rolex Explorer II Ref. 1655, often nicknamed the “Steve McQueen,” represents one of the most distinctive tool watches ever produced by Rolex. Introduced in the early 1970s, the 1655 was designed specifically for cave explorers and adventurers, featuring a fixed 24-hour bezel and an additional orange hand to help distinguish day from night in low-light environments. Its bold design, with the unique straight orange hand and striking dial layout, set it apart from other Rolex models of the era. Though initially underappreciated, the 1655 has become a highly sought-after collector’s watch, admired for its rarity, historical significance, and unmistakable character.
Key Details To Consider
Rolex Explorer II Ref. 1655 “Steve McQueen” all original in excellent to like new condition.
The stainless steel case presents in outstanding shape, featuring sharp lugs, crisp bevels, and a well-defined bezel. It may have been professionally polished to Rolex standards, as the lines remain sharp and the factory bevels are clearly preserved. The original period-correct bezel is equally well-preserved, showcasing its depth and precision.
The watch retains its original MK1 dial, paired with the correct straight hand configuration. The indices have aged to a warm yellow hue, complemented by matching hands that still react under UV light. This rare detail enhances the character and authenticity of the piece.
Its original folded-link Oyster bracelet remains exceptionally tight, with all 13 links intact and showing almost no stretch—a rarity for a model of this age. The movement was fully serviced in September 2025, ensuring accurate performance. During service, gaskets were replaced and the watch was pressure tested to 3ATM (30m).
All serial and reference numbers are intact and clearly legible. The case serial, 3.5 million, places production around 1972. The watch is accompanied by its original box.
A highly sought-after and difficult-to-find example of the Explorer II 1655, especially rare in this exceptional condition.
