DESCRIPTION

Rolex Explorer II “Steve McQueen” Ref. 1655 Stainless Steel 1973

The Rolex Explorer II Ref. 1655, often nicknamed the “Steve McQueen,” represents one of the most distinctive tool watches ever produced by Rolex. Introduced in the early 1970s, the 1655 was designed specifically for cave explorers and adventurers, featuring a fixed 24-hour bezel and an additional orange hand to help distinguish day from night in low-light environments. Its bold design, with the unique straight orange hand and striking dial layout, set it apart from other Rolex models of the era. Though initially underappreciated, the 1655 has become a highly sought-after collector’s watch, admired for its rarity, historical significance, and unmistakable character.

Key Details To Consider

Rolex Explorer II 1655 “Steve McQueen” MK2 featuring the iconic lollipop hand, presented in fully original, unpolished condition. The stainless steel case retains thick, sharply defined lugs with what appears to be the original Rolex factory finish, showing normal wear consistent with age. The MK2 dial is original and well-preserved, with an even cream-colored patina across all indices and hands. A rare fat font steel bezel complements the watch in very good condition. The bracelet exhibits minimal stretch and remains in excellent shape. This piece includes the original box and papers, with a serial number of 3.8 million, dating the watch to approximately 1973. Acquired directly from the original Italian family, it is a single-owner timepiece.
