DESCRIPTION
Rolex Explorer II Ref. 1655: The Iconic Adventurer’s Timepiece
Rolex, founded in 1905, is renowned for its precision, craftsmanship, and pioneering advancements in watchmaking. As one of the world’s most recognized luxury brands, Rolex has consistently produced timepieces that are not only functional but also symbols of status and achievement.
The Rolex Explorer II, reference 1655, debuted in 1971 and was specifically designed for adventurers and explorers, particularly spelunkers and cave explorers who required a watch with enhanced visibility in low-light conditions. Often dubbed the “Steve McQueen” (though McQueen never wore it), the 1655 became famous for its bold design, featuring an orange 24-hour hand and clear distinction between night and day hours. The model is now a highly coveted vintage piece, celebrated for its durability, unique style, and connection to a bygone era of exploration.
Key Details To Consider
This Rolex Explorer II Ref. 1655, often associated with the nickname “Steve McQueen,” is presented in all-original condition and remains a standout in the vintage Rolex lineup. The stainless steel case retains sharp lugs and crisp edges, having undergone a careful polish during its last Rolex service. At that time, the dial and hands were also replaced with Rolex service parts.
A favorite among collectors, the 1655 reference continues to command strong market interest due to its distinctive design, historical appeal, and limited production window. This example features an Oyster bracelet in excellent condition, composed of 11 links and fitting up to a 7.5” (19cm) wrist. Additional links can be made available upon request.
The case serial is 6.3 million, placing its production around 1979. All serial and reference numbers remain clean and fully visible between the lugs. The movement was serviced approximately two years ago and is running reliably with solid timekeeping performance.
A compelling example of one of Rolex’s most unique tool watches—highly collectible and increasingly hard to find in original condition with service provenance.
