Rolex Submariner Date Ref. 1680 (Circa 1977)
Rolex is one of the most influential watch manufacturers in history, renowned for its focus on precision, durability, and incremental innovation. Since its founding in 1905, the brand has been closely associated with professional tool watches designed for real-world use, particularly in aviation, diving, and exploration. Rolex’s commitment to in-house manufacturing, rigorous testing standards, and instantly recognizable design language has made it a benchmark in both functional watchmaking and long-term value retention.
The Rolex Submariner reference 1680 occupies a key position in the Submariner lineage as the first model to introduce a date complication, marking a significant evolution of Rolex’s flagship dive watch. Produced throughout the 1970s, the 1680 retains the classic proportions and utilitarian aesthetics that define vintage Submariners, while adding everyday practicality. With its acrylic crystal, aluminum bezel insert, and tritium dial, the reference 1680 is widely regarded as one of the most balanced and historically important vintage Submariners, valued for its robustness, legibility, and enduring design.
Key Details To Consider
The Rolex Submariner reference 1680 is one of the most important vintage Submariner models, marking the introduction of a date complication to Rolex’s iconic dive watch line. Produced in the 1970s, the 1680 represents a pivotal evolution in both functionality and collectability, prized today for its classic proportions, robust construction, and enduring design language.
This example is a full steel Submariner 1680 that remains all original and in very nice overall condition. The case features thick, sharp lugs and shows only light signs of wear consistent with careful use. All case engravings are clearly visible and intact, with a 5.3 million serial number dating production to approximately 1977.
The watch is fitted with an original Mk2 dial, which is pristine, with all tritium hour plots fully intact and evenly aged. The tritium hands are original and correctly matched to the dial, preserving a cohesive and authentic appearance. The period-correct bezel insert remains in very good condition, with the only noted blemish being a small spot near the 40-minute marker.
The original bracelet shows minimal stretch and is fitted with 11 links. Additional links can be provided upon request. The movement has been tested, is running well, and shows strong amplitude in the 290–295 range. The watch has also been pressure tested to 3 ATM (30 meters).
Overall, this is a highly original and well-preserved example of a reference that continues to define vintage Rolex sport watches, appealing to collectors who value originality, condition, and historical significance.
