DESCRIPTION
Rolex Submariner Ref. 1680 “Red Sub” – Circa 1970
Rolex has long been synonymous with precision, durability, and tool-watch heritage, and the Submariner line stands as one of its most iconic achievements. Introduced in 1953, the Submariner became the definitive dive watch, renowned for its robust design and legendary status both underwater and above.
The reference 1680, launched in the late 1960s, was the first Submariner to feature a date complication and is particularly prized in its early iterations with red “Submariner” text on the dial—hence the nickname “Red Sub.” Produced for a relatively short period until the mid-1970s, these early models are now among the most collectible vintage Submariners. The combination of vintage styling, practical functionality, and historical relevance makes the 1680 a cornerstone for any serious Rolex collector.
Key Details To Consider
This Rolex Submariner Ref. 1680 is an all-original example in very good overall condition, featuring the highly sought-after red Submariner dial.
The stainless steel case retains sharp, thick lugs and likely underwent a light polish in the past, but still shows strong definition and presence on the wrist.
The original red text dial shows signs of natural aging, with a light yellow patina developing across the hour markers and matching hands. The iconic faded ghost bezel insert adds a perfect vintage contrast and completes the look.
The Oyster bracelet is in excellent shape with 11 links and minimal stretch, offering a comfortable fit for most wrists.
All case numbers are clearly legible and intact. The serial number (2.7 million range) dates the watch to approximately 1970.
The movement was professionally serviced in July 2025, tested for accuracy, and pressure tested to 3ATM (30m). A strong and collectible example of one of Rolex’s most iconic vintage divers.
