Rolex Submariner

Rolex has been producing watches since the early 1900s and built much of its reputation around tool watches designed for specific purposes. The Submariner, introduced in 1953, was one of the first watches water-resistant to 100 meters and was designed as a serious diving instrument. Over the decades it became one of the most recognized watch references in the world, worn by divers, collectors, and everyday wearers alike. Rolex has always manufactured its movements in-house and holds a strong reputation for reliability and long-term serviceability.

The reference 5512 was produced from roughly 1959 to 1979 and represents an important chapter in Submariner history. It was the first Submariner to feature the crown guards protecting the winding crown, a design change that became standard across the line. Early examples like those from the 1960s are particularly sought after by collectors because they span several distinct dial and bezel variations produced during that era, including the gilt dial period with its warm, gold-printed text and distinctive glossy finish. These early versions were built before Rolex standardized much of its production, so there is natural variation from one watch to the next, which adds to their collector appeal.

From a practical standpoint, the 5512 runs on the caliber 1530 or, in later examples, the 1570 movement, both of which are well-understood and relatively easy to service by a competent watchmaker. The case measures 40mm, which wears comfortably and has aged well in terms of proportions. Prices for the 5512 have climbed steadily over the years as vintage Rolex collecting has matured, and condition, originality of the dial and hands, and case integrity are the primary factors that determine where a given example lands in the market.

Key Details To Consider

This is a 1966 Rolex Submariner reference 5512, a genuinely well-preserved example of one of the most sought-after vintage Submariner references from that era. The watch is all original in its overall composition, with a few details worth noting clearly for any prospective buyer.

The case has been polished at some point by a previous owner, which is worth keeping in mind if you prefer untouched surfaces. That said, the lugs remain notably thick, which speaks to how little material was actually removed. The serial number, sitting in the 1.3 million range, correctly places this watch in 1966, and all engravings on the case are fully legible and intact.

The dial and hands are not the original gilt configuration you might expect from a 1966 example. They have been replaced with original Rolex factory Maxi matte components, and the yellow luminous material sits evenly across all the indices and hands without any obvious inconsistency or deterioration. The original black bezel insert has aged naturally over the decades, fading to a softer charcoal tone that gives the watch a lot of visual character.

The solid 93150 Oyster bracelet has 11 links and fits a 7.5 inch (19 cm) wrist comfortably. Additional links can be made available on request. The bracelet is in excellent shape relative to the age of the watch.

The movement was professionally serviced in October 2024 and has been pressure tested to 3 ATM (30 meters). It runs correctly. This is a solid vintage Submariner for a collector who wants a wearable, well-maintained piece with honest and transparent history.
