Rolex Submariner

Rolex is one of the most recognized watch manufacturers in the world, based in Geneva, Switzerland. The brand has been producing watches since the early 1900s and built its reputation on reliable, robust tool watches designed for real use. Rolex developed much of the foundational technology behind modern sport watches, including the Oyster case and the self-winding Perpetual movement. Their watches hold value well and have a strong following among both collectors and everyday wearers.

The Submariner is Rolex's dive watch, introduced in 1953. It was one of the first watches rated to 100 meters of water resistance, and it became a reference point for dive watches across the entire industry. The design has stayed largely consistent over the decades, which speaks to how well it was thought out from the start. It reads well underwater, wears comfortably, and holds up to regular use. Beyond diving, it became a broadly popular everyday watch, and that crossover appeal is a big part of why it has remained relevant for so long.

The reference 5513 was produced from 1962 to 1989, making it one of the longest-running Submariner references. It used a non-chronometer-rated movement, which kept the price point lower than the 1680 at the time, but in practice it ran just as well for most wearers. The 5513 went through several dial and bezel insert variations over its production life, and collectors pay close attention to these details. Examples from the 1970s and 1980s, particularly those with aged dials and inserts, have become genuinely sought after in the vintage market.

Key Details To Consider

The Rolex Submariner reference 5513 is one of the most sought-after vintage Rolex sports watches, and this particular example from 1978 presents very well for its age. The serial number falls in the 5.7 million range, placing production in 1978, and the watch comes with its original box and punched papers bearing an AD stamp dated 1979.

The case has been polished at some point by a previous owner, but it retains thick lugs and good overall proportions, which says a lot about how well the case has held up over the decades. All case numbers remain fully legible and intact. The oyster bracelet is fitted with the correct 580 end links, carries all its original links, and shows no stretch, which is genuinely uncommon on a bracelet of this age.

The dial is a period-correct maxi dial and the real highlight of this watch. The patina on the indices and hands has developed into a warm, even pumpkin tone that spreads consistently across the dial. The bezel insert has aged to a faded blue color that gives the watch a lot of character and is consistent with a properly preserved example from this era. Both the dial and insert are original and correct for the reference.

The movement was professionally serviced in June 2026 and has been pressure tested to 3 ATM (30 meters), so it is running well and ready to wear. Overall this is a solid, honest example of a vintage 5513 with the right parts, good provenance, and a lot of natural aging that collectors appreciate.
