DESCRIPTION
Rolex Submariner 5513 “Meters First” 1965
The Rolex Submariner is one of the most iconic dive watches ever created, setting the benchmark for underwater timepieces since its debut in 1953. Renowned for its robust construction, precision, and legibility, the Submariner became the definitive tool watch for divers and professionals alike. The reference 5513, produced from the early 1960s through the late 1980s, represents one of the longest-running and most celebrated Submariner models. Known for its clean two-line dial and no-date configuration, the 5513 embodies the pure design DNA of the Submariner line. Early “meters first” variants, such as this one, are especially prized among collectors for their rarity, transitional dial layouts, and historic connection to Rolex’s evolution of the professional diver’s watch.
Key Details To Consider
Rolex Submariner Ref. 5513 “Meters First” presented in overall excellent condition.
The stainless steel case retains thick and sharp lugs, showing signs of a previous polish while preserving what appear to be factory bevels throughout. The original “meters first” matte dial is beautifully preserved, featuring zinc sulfide lume that still glows bright green under UV light.
Interestingly, based on the production year, this watch would have originally featured a glossy gilt dial, suggesting the current matte dial was fitted within a year or two after production—a detail that adds to its historical intrigue.
All case numbers are crisp and fully legible, with the serial number 1.2 million dating the watch to 1965, confirmed by the case back stamp. The movement runs properly and has been pressure tested to 3ATM (30m).
It comes fitted on a handmade 20/16mm brown leather strap with a Rolex steel pin buckle, offering a vintage aesthetic that complements this exceptional early Submariner.
